Red Fort
One of the most potent tourism icons of Delhi, the Red Forts is one of the most fascinating architectural heritage monuments built by Mughals. Conceived by Shah Jahan who defined the golden era of Mughal architecture, it finds mention in the travelogues and books written by several foreigners who visited India during the Mughal rule. Francois Bernier, who visited India during Aurangzeb’s period, dutifully and eloquently noted the finer details of the magnificence and grandeur of the royal court of Mughals. Abu Talib Kalim, the court poet during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, rightly quoted:
‘They have inlaid stone flowers in marble,
Which surpass reality in color, if not in fragrance.’
When he decided to build a new city named after him as Shahjahanabad on a barren piece of land with only ruins of earlier structures, he used best architectural designs, renowned skilled artistes and latest construction methods known at the time to built a grand and stately Red Fort to watch over the city. It took about 10 years and 10 million rupees to built the mighty Red Fort of Delhi, which was inaugurated in April 1649 with much pomp and show. The intercultural bonding was strengthening as Mughals and native Indians exchanged ideas and mingled together to form India that we see today. This is evident in the architecture of Red Fort as architectural styles, layout of the various structures, and embellishments and motifs used for ornamentations can be traced back to different regions of India and abroad, including areas as far-flung as Gujarat and Bengal in the Indian sub-continent and Tansoxania in Central Asia – the place of origin for the Mughals.
India tourism has one thing in common. A highlight of North India tourism package and Golden Triangle tours, the Red Fort is not untouched by the magical folklores and narratives that add character to the lifeless stone structures and fire our imagination. The expansive Red Fort harbors a historical fortified palatial complex with some of the most intriguing tales about its royal occupants. At Red Fort, you can see the grand marble suites where the last Mughal king, Bahadur Shah Zafar, composed poems before being imprisoned by the British in 1857. James Fergusson rightly said - ‘The palace at Delhi is, or rather was, the most magnificent palace in the East - perhaps in the world…carried out on one uniform plan’.
