The Periyar Wildlife National Park located in the Idduki district of the south Indian state of Kerala is one of the most exotic and vibrant place to relish the best of Flora and Fauna in the Indian subcontinent. The park covers an area of about 777 sq-km of cardamom hill ranges in the Idduki District. The tourist zone of the Periyar National Park is close to the scenic small town of Kumily which has a very attractive market of atypical spices of coastal India. Due to the benign efforts of the Maharaja of the State of Travancore, Periyar, it was given the status of reserve forest in 1934.
The Periyar Lake lies in the catchment area of the sanctuary, dotted with a few islands and tree stumps. The wildlife reserve surrounds the dense wooded hills which are the source of water to the local wildlife all year long. Though the Forest reserve is mainly a tiger reserve it presents you the most exciting and zealous elephants of India which exhibit enormous activity, splashing and sprinkling water all around with their trunks.
The National Forest Department maintains that the Periyar National Wildlife Sanctuary has about 40 tigers, 20 leopards, 900 elephants and 280 gaur. The Periyar National Wildlife Sanctuary is an amalgam of tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen woods that is inhabited by a huge variety of flora and fauna. The rarest of the rare species are found here which include- the Lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri langur, the Malabar giant squirrel, porcupine, wild dog, sloth bear, jungle cat, sambar, palm civet, wild boar, jackal and approximately 180 species of birds including the rare Great Indian Hornbill, Grey herons, kingfishers, egrets, darters, coots, fish-owls, grackles and cormorants. The river Periyar in the heart of the sanctuary is accompanied with two other buoyant and pristine streams- the Azhutha and the Mullayar.
The woods with colossal heights of about 130-140 feet are so densely populated that the vast green forest is impenetrable for the sunlight to reach the swampy pampas inside.
The reptilian population of the sanctuary includes the great Monitor Lizard that is easily spotted on the rocks beside the lake in the heart of the haven. Seldom visitors spot the King Cobra and the Python.
In the bosom of the lush green valleys, the Periyar wildlife sanctuary has an exotic environment that offers you the best of all weathers. The clean voluble waves, bright sun and the tropical humidity that is intrinsic of the coastal plains make up for serene and exquisite vistas. Your tour to India must include a visit to this phenomenally distinct forest and wildlife reserve. Most India tour operators of South India or Kerala include a trip to this beautiful abode of the rarest creations of the almighty on earth.
