Chennai Travel Guide

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu and is one of the four major metropolitan cities in India. Greatly admired and known as the ‘Gateway to the South,’ this city that began as a small fisherman’s village over 350 years ago that has transformed today into the city we know. The city is still rising, increasing, and shifting every day.

Earlier called as Madras, the city gained recognition during the British rule when they built the first settlement called Fort St. George in 1653. It was from here that the cunning British settler Robert Clive deliberated his armed operations in India, operations that gained paramount power for them in the days and years that followed.

Chennai is a vivacious and lively city that is discovering itself constantly. While relics of the colonial past still remain in the museums, the churches, the courts, and the forts, a good deal of development and industrialization has taken place side by side. Today we see high-rise buildings housing the world famous IT companies while still maintaining the architecture in the temples and palaces, making it the starting point of the many Luxury Tamil Nadu Tours that commence their trips from here. Traditional South Indian music, dance and drama have always flourished in the city with great enthusiasm. The city is also the home of the famous film industry.

The city boasts of the famous Presidency College. And the American and British Council libraries are talked about as one of the best in the world.

Finally, it can be proudly added that Chennai is the Detroit of India - top car manufacturers like Ford and Hyundai have their operating units here.
