Dharmapuri Travel Guide

Dharmapuri is located inside the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Also known as “Tagadur,” this charming area is surrounded by the districts of Thirivanamallai, Villupuram, Salem and Krishnagiri with the River Kaveri flowing on its west. The place is swarming with several places of worship built by the Chola and Vijaynagar rulers, many of them having links to the Ramayana. It has many sightseeing spots like waterfalls, dams and more. One of the earlier rulers of Dharmapuri, Adigaman Naduman Anji, who ruled here during the Sangam era, is known to have supported Tamil Nadu’s most famous poet “Awaiyar.” Many historical figures like Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan have marched through Dharmapuri at some time before the British Empire took over. Dharmapuri is blessed with substantial reserves of high-quality black granite. Finally, Dharmapuri is most known for its world-famous delicious mangoes.

Dharmapuri is certainly a tourist delight. The Tamil Nadu Tourism department regularly conducts sightseeing excursions to Dharmapuri. There are several temples and sightseeing highlights. One will not like to miss:

Shopping:

Mangoes of the best varieties can be had cheap as Dharmapuri accounts for half of Tamil Nadu’s mango yield. Chilli spices of export quality can also be bought. Tomatoes can be had at wholesale prices.

Where to stay:

Dharmapuri is convenient in that it offers hotels and resorts to go well with any budget. Rooms can be had easily even during the best season in December to February. Some of the best hotels are part of the several Luxury Tamil Nadu Tours and Tamil Nadu Religious Tours that often include the city in its itineraries. A visitor can also stay at:

How to reach Dharmapuri:

A well organised set-up of roads and railroads connect Dharmapuri to many of the important cities in the state.

By Road: National Highway 7 passes through Dharmapuri to connect it easily to go anywhere. Several state-run transport buses move around to and from Dharmapuri to many places. There are also the services of luxury video coaches that offer a comfortable journey even during the night. The roads are always busy taking passengers to Salem, Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore at all times.

By Rail: Dharmapuri station is busy at all times with many express and passenger trains moving through the city. One can easily go over to Salem and Coimbatore on one side and even up to Chennai on the other.

By Air: A tourist arriving by air can reach Dharmapuri by alighting at Coimbatore or Chennai.
