Madurai Travel Guide

Situated on the banks of river Vaigai, Madurai is one of the oldest inhabited cities of the Indian peninsula. The cultural heritage of the temple town in Tamil Nadu goes back 2500 years. The city is designed in concentric rectangular streets (signifying the structure of the cosmos) around the Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple. The temple among others is an architectural marvel. The colossal grandeur of the marvellous structure is an ornamental amalgamation of massive entrance gates, pillars, deities, painting, shrines and a golden lotus tank. The city also called 'Athens of the East' is famous for Jasmine. Consequently the city is also known as Mallagai Maanagar (city of Jasmine).

How to reach Madurai:

By Air: Madurai airport is 10 km away from the city. There are daily flights to various important places of the country.

By Train: Railways can be an exciting way to arrive in Madurai. The railway station in one of the most important railway junctions of the Southern Railway. The Vaigai Express can be an excellent option to travel. The super-fast train takes just 7 hours for the 495kms between Chennai and Madurai.

By Bus: The city has 5 major bus stands that connect Madurai to almost all parts of south India. Buses are available round the clock.
