Pudukottai was a princely state of British India under the political authority of Madras Presidency. After independence, it became a part of the Tiruchirappalli District of Madras State. The present Pudukkottai District was formed from parts of Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur district. The state consists mainly of an undulating plain, it is scattered with rocky hills in the southwest. It is rich Granite, feldspar, quartz and laterite. Red ochre, silk, cotton fabrics, bell-metal vessels and perfumes are the major goods that are produced in Pudukottai. Tanned barks and groundnuts are the main products that are exported. It has coastline of about 39 km.
