Salem Travel Guide
Salem, one of the most beautiful and serene places of South India is the fifth largest city of Tamil Nadu. Located in the central part of the southern most state of India, Salem, has a major steel industry, it is also called the Steel City. Scattered with mounds, the Salem district has four major parts - Mettur, Attur, Omalur and the capital, Salem. Encircled by hills from all four sides, the Nagarmalai in the north, the Jeragamalai in the south, Kanjanamalai on the west, and Godumali on the east. This Mango city of Tamil Nadu also has mineral ores and textile industry. The Fort area of this calm and composed city is the oldest part of the town, which was ruled by the Madurai Nayaks till 18th century after which it was ruled by the Nawab Hyder Ali, later it came under the British rule.

The town has numerous temples and shrines, which are of great religious, cultural and aesthetic value. The architecture of the temples is highly engaging. July is the major festive season for ‘The Marriamman’ is celebrated for a fortnight; the Kottai Mariamman is the most famous amongst all the Marriamman temples in not just Salem but throughout Tamil Nadu. Salem is the common point for travel between other major parts like Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Thiruvanthapuram, Cochin, Pondicherry, Trichy, Kanyakumari etc.By Road: The three important national highways- NH7, NH47 and NH68 intersect at Salem. All parts of Salem are smoothly connected by roads. It has two bus stands – MGR Bus Terminus also known as Central Bus Terminus, which connects Salem with other parts of Tamil Nadu; and Town Bus Stand for local routes.
By Rail: Salem has good rail connectivity with the capital city of Chennai. MS Salem Express and Yercaud Express are the two very important trains, which connect the town with other parts the state.
By Air: The nearest airports are the Trichy International Airport and the Coimbatore Airport, which are 135 kms and 159 kms respectively from the town. Salem has its own airport, Salem Airport which is a domestic airport with international standards situated at Kamalapuram near Omalur on NH7 but presently it is only being used for charter flights.
