Thanjavur is an important centre of South Indian art and architecture. The Brihadeeswara Temple, located in the centre of the town is one of the most famous temples of South India. Thanjavaur’s contribution to classical music has been significant. The town is an important agricultural centre and the chief producer of rice, it is called the ‘Rice Bowl of India’. The Government has built a South Zone Cultural Centre to preserve the cultural heritage of Southern India in Thanjavur. The Thanjavur area has abounding historical legacy. By Road: Thanjavur is well connected with Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kumbakonam, Pattukkottai, Bangalore, Ernakulam, Marthandam, Nagercoil, Tirupathi, Thiruvananthapuram, Ooty and Mysore through both private and government bus services. Thanjavur has two bus terminals- the Old and The New Bus Terminus. It has a good domestic public transport system. Nagapattinum is the nearest seaport, which is about 84 km from the town.
