Ghats of Varanasi
According to the Hindu mythology and belief, Banaras is the centre of the universe. It is one of the oldest cities of the world. The renowned American writer, Mark Twain once said -"Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". Banaras, also known as Kashi – the city of light, is situated along the west bank of the Ganges (River Ganga). Banaras is a place where smoke from pyres and the sound of the temple bells conjoin to create an enchanting aura of religious passion.

The crowd of saints in orange and white, the loud hum of the religious entreaty and devotees performing different rituals, embody the culture and religious sanctity of India. The 4 km stretch covering all the Ghats are best seen early morning. The best way to approach the Ghats is by Dashashwamedha Ghat, where boats are available on hire. A boat traverse to the close by Manikarnika Ghat divulges Hindu cremation rites, where covered bodies and funeral pyres are lined up with marigold flowers decorating the holy waters below.
