The bird life sustained in the Dudhwa National Park is startling as the marshland provides a natural habitat for the winter migrant birds. This massive wildlife sanctuary is an ultimate delight for bird lovers which shelters the beautiful and rare Lesser Bengal Florican and Swamp Partridge - both these genus are on the red alert record. The Dudhwa National Park's stretch of the montage grasslands with swampy marshes is as diverse as the wildlife population it sustains. The northern end of the Park lies along the Indo-Nepal border, the gushing crystal clear River Suheli lies in the south. Since 1879 the Dudhwa National Park was a tiger reserve and later became a National Park in 1977 simultaneously adopting Project Tiger in 1988. Though the park has many tigers the woods are immensely dense and impenetrable in secluded patches that seldom allows a glimpse of the ferocious animal. Leopards and Hispid Hares also thrive in the course of this unfathomable and mystifying vegetation. Other animals found in Dudhwa are the jungle cats, leopard cats, fishing cats, jackals, civets, sloth bears, sambar, otters, crocodiles and chital. Apart from the swamp deer, the park comprises of at least 37 species of mammals and 16 species of reptiles. Dudhwa Wildlife Sanctuary boasts of a huge 101 tigers and four leopards. The park also possesses some of the most common but celebrated birds of the Indian Peninsula- Great Grey Woodpecker, plenty of painted Storks, Sarus cranes, Owls, Barbets, Minivets and many more. Majority of the avian population found here is aquatic in nature which flourishes around the Banke Tal (Lake). The foremost vegetation types in this expanse are tropical semi-evergreen forest, tropical moist deciduous forest, riparian and swamp forest and dry deciduous forest. The principal tree species are Shorea robusta, Terminalis tomentosa, Adina cordifolia, Terminalia belerica, Eugenia jambolana, Dalbergia sissoo, and Bombax malabaricum. The assorted types of forests all through the park are sporadic by wide stretches of mesophyllous grasslands locally called the phantas. Amongst reptiles, pythons and monitor lizards are somewhat common. Dudhwa houses the greatest number of owls and storks in India. Also, found in a massive number are the great Indian horned owl, the forest eagle owl, the brown fish owl, the tawny owl, the dusky horned owl, the scops owl, brown wood owl and the jungle owlet. The storks, which abound here, are the black-necked stork, white-necked stork, black stork, painted stork, white stork, open-billed stork and the adjutant stork. A variety of colourful birds like woodpeckers, orioles, pittas, kingfishers and sunbirds also dwell in this Park.
